Vitreous Enamelling

Bathroom restoration

As well as Bath Resurfacing, we offer a re-enamelling service fired in the furnace.

Old cast iron baths can be restored to their former glory and original finish by vitreous re-enamelling.

Vitreous enamel is a form of glass which is applied as a decorative finish to metal. It has associated properties hardness, colour stability, scratch and fire resistance.

The process requires the removal of the old enamel surface by shot blasting back to the original casting. Ground coat is applied before the bath is placed in the furnace for a series of firing at temperatures in excess of 800 degrees Celsius. The final outcome being the traditional white glazed finish or a colour of your choice.

As the vitreous enamel will follow the contours of the base casting the finish can be characteristically uneven. Owing to the very high temperatures in the furnace tiny black specks, pin holes and slight crazing may occur. This is unavoidable when working with old cast baths that may be over 150 years old. Such symptoms are only cosmetic and will have no bearing on the functionality of the bath.

Note, as a Bath restoration company of over 30 years experience we can address any pin holes and black specs at no additional charge to the customer.

3

When cleaning the bath always use a liquid cleaner suitable for enamel baths. Do not use an abrasive cleaner to remove limescale
